Hello,
I'm working on a museum studies assignment that is due tomorrow (NO SLEEP FOR ME TONIGHT : D)
and finding out that Australia was even more racist than I thought!
Last year I went on a field trip all around different museums in Australia, and one of the places had this old old flag that said "Roll up, Roll up, No Chinese"
Here:
And here is me in front of it when I was fatter and had WAY TOO SHORT HAIR
I knew that flag was racist anyway... but... I have been researching more about it... and... my search has uncovered some pretty amazingly racist things.
Basically that flag was made for this huge "Chinese man beat up" rally on the gold fields of 1861.
They were pissed at the Chinese because they worked harder than them at mining gold.
This riot/rally led to all these anti-Chinese immigration policies, which eventually led to the White Australia policy in 1901. It restricted non-white immigration to Australia and wasn't removed until 1973 >_>;;
Back in the early 1900s any white person coming to Australia that wasn't a criminal (et tu, early Australia?) would instantly become an Australian.
anyway... this post is basically just one big procrastination from my assignment >_>;
I should probably end it by saying Australia is much better nowadays, over 30% of Sydney was born overseas, and more than 100k Chinese live in Sydney.
Buuuut... actually... a lot of people (some I am friends with ) are randomly heaps against Aborigines (but completely normal with other races). BUT THAT'S ANOTHER STORY.
and I know all the Australians in guild are cool
