Adol The Red, thanks for the suggestion on Optifine. Regrettably, I have tossed that mod aside as rubbish due to all the rendering bugs it causes, especially with other mods but also with vanilla. It turns out this room is extremely dusty, and scraping (yes, scraping) the dust from the last 6 months off the front grilles of my case has helped considerably with the overheating issue. I still need a new machine to handle the performance requirements of over half a dozen major worldgen mods, but at least now it doesn't feel like it's dying a prolonged, painful death.
