The university newspaper here has an editorial cartoon with some lady reading a bedtime story to her son: "And the BIG BAD WHITE MAN shot and killed the innocent little black boy." Ugh. Do I approve of censorship? No. Do I approve of insensitive material about dead children? No.

I can honestly say I'm really sick of hearing about that story. To be clear: Do I think that it is a tragedy that anyone, especially a child, died? Absolutely. Do I think that the media is ever going to portray an accurate image of what actually happened therefor allowing me to make a confident judgment of the situation? Nope. The media has jumbled this case so bad, and every day "new" information is coming out, only to have half of it discredited the next day. ugh

Don't let your fear of heights hold you back!

When I first read this, I thought it was an endorsement to jump into the canyon.

Also, I share a fear of heights, but standing heights only. I hate being at top of a really large structure and looking down, I get a pretty descent reaction of vertigo from it. I love flying and being in planes, as well as roller coasters!! WOO roller coasters!!

I'm totally fine with heights so long as there is a stable rail and solid flooring under me. I can't do grate bridges/overhangs though. We went to a castle in Germany where we had to cross a grate bridge and I had to crawl across it.

And if you aim for the bushes makes sure they're the fluffy kind that drops hearts!

I only seem to be bad with heights when I don't have control over my height. For instance: back in the day when my family took a trip out west I was climbing every tall rocky thing that I could reach (my mom would tell me later that it scared the crap outta her, but she let me do it 'cause she loved to climb things when she was little). Many of the things I climbed could have easily wounded me terribly or killed me. Still, I had control over the situation myself.

In a roller coaster or in a plane, though...well I'm at the mercy of the machine, and MUCH higher! The plane falls - that's it! I'm not freakin' out or anything, but I do spend most of my time in a plane trying to imagine the turbulence as bumps in a road. So long as I can fool my brain into thinking it's in a car and the ground below is just a cool map screen, I'm good! In terms of coasters...well I've gotten over it for the most part. I'm good if I'm strapped in with shoulder things and not sllooowwwllyy going up. I can do most coasters, but not drop towers 'n stuff like that.

Yeah Alexx, I used to have big problems with roller coasters when I was a kid. My family would leave me behind and I would have to wait around as they stood in line and rode the big coasters. They would constantly try and get me going, but I was too freaked out. Then while they were waiting in a really long line for one, after a lot of contemplation, I decided to join them in line because I was tired of feeling afraid of it. It was one of the biggest baddest coasters at the time, one called The Viper at Six Flags Magic Mountain. After we were done with the ride, I was so freaking exhilerated and thrilled that I became an immediate enthusiast! haha

Even though I grew to like big coasters, it took me a few years to get over my fear of doing a sudden drop coaster. It's the waiting before the drop that really kills me. I got over it and came to like them too, but not as much as the big metallic ones - X2 being one of the last coolest ones I've ridden. The biggest challenge for me was riding the needle, Big Shot, on the top of the Stratosphere in Vegas. HOLY CRAP MAN. That thing is scary as hell for someone afraid of base heights. @_@ I get dizzy just thinking about it haha
